A weak auxiliary battery is the most common reason a Prius will not go into Ready, and it can look like a hybrid fault.
A Prius will not start its hybrid system without a healthy 12-volt battery, even though the big battery is full. The small battery powers the computers that close the high-voltage relays, so when it sags, the car shows a dark dash, a flurry of warning lights or nothing at all.
What owners notice
The car will not go into Ready, the dash lights flicker or come on in strange combinations, the doors or hatch behave oddly, or the car starts fine one morning and not the next. Because the warning lights look serious, many owners expect a hybrid or EV battery problem.
What the shops check first
A proper load test of the 12-volt battery, not just a voltage reading, then the charging behavior with the system on, the battery terminals and grounds, and any drain while the car is parked. A battery that tests weak is replaced with the correct type for its location, since some sit inside the cabin and need a vented design.
What the repair usually involves
Most of these jobs end with a new 12-volt battery and cleared fault history. Where the car keeps draining its battery, the work continues into finding the circuit responsible, which takes longer than the battery itself.
What the shops' records show
The count at the top of this report is every repair order matching this problem across the EV Partners shops, recounted from their Shop-Ware records whenever they sync. Below it, each shop that has done this work shows its own share, the model years it saw and what it did, with a link to its own write-up where one exists.
Questions owners ask
Is this Toyota Prius problem expensive to fix?
It depends on what the testing finds. Many cases end with a smaller part than owners fear. The shops test before they quote and explain the options and their trade-offs first.
Can I keep driving with this Toyota Prius problem?
Sometimes, for a short while, but warning lights on a hybrid or EV are worth checking soon. Some faults reduce power or stop the car without much notice, and a few involve high voltage. Call one of the shops and describe what the car is doing.
