A plug-in still needs its small battery healthy, and long periods parked on a charger can hide a failing one.
Plug-in owners often assume the charger looks after everything. It charges the big battery; the 12-volt battery is kept up only while the system is on, so a car that sits plugged in for days can still greet its owner with a no-start.
What owners notice
The car will not go into Ready, the dash lights flicker or come on in strange combinations, the doors or hatch behave oddly, or the car starts fine one morning and not the next. Because the warning lights look serious, many owners expect a hybrid or EV battery problem.
